Fed up with a complete lack of speciality coffee in his home city of Manchester, James set up The Coffee Circle in 2012 and set about learning the complex craft of roasting, whilst working as a barista.

Sean was the youngest Q grader in the country and origin trips in his previous role as assistant buyer and taster with Lincoln and York set him firmly on the path of coffee love! Keen to be part of building something special in Manchester, he has teamed up with James and Heart and Graft is alive!


The duo moved into their new site in Newton Heath, an old workshop with wooden beams and plenty of space in August 2018. They built a training room where you'll usually find Kieron either training customers, or constructing his next competition routine and brought their purple and brass Giesen W15.


They have always been about bringing the coffee comunity together with events and cuppings, throwdowns and parties. It was at one of these events I first saw the space and I've been back a few times for UKBC heats, cuppings and sometimes just to chat with the guys.

Natural processing can be a tricky affair for farmers who have grown up with more traditional wet processing, but Carloman has nailed this one! It'll be delicious as an Aeropress or espresso, to really get into those juicy sweet flavours. 

Even on a light roast, there is a sugary cherry ripeness and milk chocolate creaminess to this coffee, making it very moreish. Its really well structured, with a nice clean acidity at the start, then all that cherry choc sweetness and a constant underlying fruity funk from the natural process. 

Its a delight to get a real sense of place with this coffee, its familiar to the one we had previously, but also distinct and up a few notches with its clarity and complexity. 

Carloman Carranza is part of the Jumarp cooperative in Northern Peru, set up in 2003 with farmers joining together to improve standards in coffee quality, equality and sustainability. We've bought this coffee through the Algrano platform, which links farmers to a marketplace of speciality coffee roasters, THANKS GUYS!

Its an amazing thing to be part of a slow burning coffee revolution in which coffee farmers can access information and technology and build relationships, forming co-ops and opening up access to a market that values their craft. We very much buzz off buying from entrepreneurial farmers and being able to link them to you by roasting it so you can enjoy the fruits of their skill and hard work!

    Whatever you order, we will get it to you as soon as possible. Any brewing equipment or filters will be in stock unless otherwise stated on the page. Tasting boxes will be assembled and sent sometimes the next day if coffee has just arrived, but may take up to 2 weeks to reach you. All roasted coffee will arrive within 2 weeks from the date of order, but we aim for 3-4 days.
