The Extract journey started in 2007 in the most humble of roasteries, their garden shed. As they have grown over the years, the roastery has moved twice. Extract are currently based deep in the heart of Bristol, a city they are proud to call home, and one I love to visit. 

 

It's hard to place when I first came into contact with the Extract crew, it was probably judging the Brewers cup with Dan Lacey a few years back, though I feel it was before then. In any case, we've kept in touch. Last year I went to Dan for an SCA sensory course he was running, at Extract of course. It was great to complete another course with a good friend. Extract are a really tight team, they are very much a family and when they take on a project like sending skateboards to Ethiopia they are all involved.

I worked with Ash to source this coffee, which is produced in the surrounding hills of the Chirripó Mountain, the highest in Costa Rica, where the soil is rich, and the rainfall abundant. Whilst this coffee uses the natural process, the washed coffees from the same co-op only use rain-water to process their coffees. Costa Rica is particularly strict on water usage, and pollution from discarded coffee pulp, therefore natural processing is relatively common here. The ripe coffee cherries are picked and dried without removal of the fruit skin or pulp, before being milled. This takes time, but the rewards are vibrant, stone-fruit rich and floral tasting coffees.

 

The co-op produces and supplies its own organic fertilizer as well as running a local cafe. The co-op has also assisted in enabling rural producers to access the global coffee market.

    Whatever you order, we will get it to you as soon as possible. Any brewing equipment or filters will be in stock unless otherwise stated on the page. Tasting boxes will be assembled and sent sometimes the next day if coffee has just arrived, but may take up to 2 weeks to reach you. All roasted coffee will arrive within 2 weeks from the date of order, but we aim for 3-4 days.

    All orders under £30 are sent 1st class royal mail. Orders over £30 are sent next day recorded delivery. Shipping terms are correct at the time of order but subject to change in the future.
